In April, Roblox told shareholders its new age check had hurt. Chat had been restricted, conversations diluted and sign-ups slowed, it said in the Q1 letter. Two quarters later, the number of daily users who chat grew twice as fast as the platform. I think the age check was a one-time toll on Roblox's network, and the 9% year-on-year fall in daily users is mostly the 2025 boom being lapped.
That's the question a holder should care about after this print. The bookings decline is a monetisation problem Roblox has been working through all year. A broken friend network, meaning kids no longer finding and talking to the people they play with, would be a moat problem, and the age check was the most likely thing to cause one.
The forecast
What Roblox said the age check cost
Roblox made an age check mandatory for chat on January 7, 2026, rolling out to every region with chat over the following week. Users who haven't checked can't chat, and those who have can only talk to nearby age bands. Here is how Roblox described the effect each quarter since.
| Quarter | Daily users age-checked | What Roblox said about chat |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 2026 | 51% (US 65%) | "…tempered by greater-than-expected headwinds from our age-check roll out, which restricted on-platform communication for non-age checked users, diluted communication for age-checked users, and slowed new user acquisition" |
| Q2 2026 | 57% | "We have started to see improvement in on-platform communications, though we still have more work to do to drive on-platform communications above pre-age check levels" |
| Q3 2026 | 64% (US 75%, over 80% of 13 to 17 year olds) | Daily users who chatted or connected to voice grew 24% from Q2, double the platform; chat messages up 13% from Q2 to 1.6 billion a day |
The Q3 letter doesn't compare chat with pre-check levels, and Roblox didn't give a chatting-user figure in Q1 or Q2, so I can't chart that line yet. Part of that 24% is mechanical: every completed check unlocks another chatter, and completion rose from 57% to 64% in the quarter. So the number shows the gate's backlog clearing, and not yet a network back at full strength. What it rules out is the bad case, a friend graph that stayed broken after users had passed the check.
The audience
Where the 9% went
| Period | Daily active users |
|---|---|
| Q3 2024 | 88.9M |
| Q4 2024 | 85.3M |
| Q1 2025 | 97.8M |
| Q2 2025 | 112M |
| Q3 2025 | 152M |
| Q4 2025 | 144M |
| Q1 2026 | 132M |
| Q2 2026 | 123M |
| Q3 2026 | 138M |
Q3 2025 is the quarter Roblox's audience jumped 70%, so the year-on-year comparison is against the biggest quarter it has ever had. Against Q3 2024, daily users are up 55%. A spike on a platform without a network effect fades back toward where it started. This one kept most of its gain through a year that also included an age check and, from December 2025 until June, a ban in Russia.
Q3 is also the summer quarter, so some of the rise from Q2 is seasonal, and Roblox's Q4 guide assumes the usual seasonal dip. That's why I put more weight on chat growing faster than the platform than on the platform's 12% itself.
The cross-read
Australia shows the harsher kind of age gate
Australia's under-16 social media rule took effect on December 10, 2025. The eSafety Commissioner named Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Snapchat, YouTube and Reddit among the platforms that had to comply, and listed Roblox among those that didn't. By mid-January the government said more than 4.7 million under-16 accounts had been deactivated, removed or restricted. eSafety says it won't publish a split by platform.
That's a gate that takes away a teenager's account. Roblox's version keeps them on and narrows who they can talk to. If rules like Australia's spread, Meta, Snap, YouTube and Reddit face the harsher version, and Roblox has already paid for the milder one. It has also built the checking, the age bands and the moderation, which a newcomer chasing the same kids would have to build before it had the users to pay for them.
Our ratings don't give Roblox, Meta, Snap or Reddit any regulatory moat, and Alphabet's comes from its search business, not YouTube's teen audience. I agree with that. Rules like these cost every platform users. I think they protect the network effect our ratings already score, by raising the price of starting a rival one.
| Gate | Started | Who it covers | What happens to a teen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australia's Social Media Minimum Age rule | December 10, 2025 | Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Snapchat, YouTube, Reddit and others; Roblox not covered | Under-16s may not hold an account; over 4.7 million accounts deactivated, removed or restricted by mid-January 2026 (all platforms) |
| Roblox's chat age check | January 7, 2026, rolled out worldwide over a week | Every Roblox user who wants to chat | Stays on Roblox; chat needs a check and is limited to nearby age bands; 64% of daily users checked by end of Q3 2026 |
The counter-case
The money hasn't come back with the users
The best argument against me is that I'm reading recovery into a line Roblox itself won't draw. In Q2 it said chat wasn't back above pre-check levels. In Q3 it gave a growth rate from Q2 and nothing against the old baseline. If chat were fully back, I'd expect Roblox to say so, and it didn't.
The money is the second problem. Monthly payers fell 16% from a year earlier, to 30 million, faster than daily users. Bookings fell 12% to $1.70 billion. For Q4, Roblox guided bookings down 10% to 15% and adjusted EBITDA to a loss of $10 million to $70 million. Revenue rose 16% in Q3, but that's earlier bookings being recognised. A healthy network should be paying more, and Roblox's isn't yet.
Some of what looks like strength was bought. Adults rose to 29% of age-checked daily users from 27% in Q2, and Roblox estimates US adult daily users grew 18% from a year earlier. But it ran over 200 campaigns this summer, with marketing aimed at adults up nearly threefold, and it raised creator payouts, partly to reward spending by US adults, so developer exchange fees rose to 24% of bookings from 22%. Roblox also says its age-checked figures are estimates and not comparable with its older data.
And the gate isn't finished. Over a third of daily users still haven't checked, so some of the friction is still ahead, and Roblox booked $140 million of legal settlement costs in the first nine months of 2026 on youth consumer-protection and digital-safety matters.
I take the first point most seriously. If Roblox reaches Q2 2027 without saying chat is back above where it was, the toll wasn't paid once. On the money, I think falling payers are a monetisation problem Roblox can work on with a network still there. A shrinking network would be worse, and the chart doesn't show one.
What to watch
Q2 2027 against 123 million
Q2 2027 is the first quarter compared with a year the 2025 boom didn't inflate, and Q2 2026's daily users were 123 million. Below that, the audience is shrinking and I'm wrong. Russia was back for only part of Q2 2026, so Q2 2027 gets a small lift from it, and I'd read a result only just above 123 million as a near miss. Before then, I'll watch the chat line in each letter for a comparison with pre-check levels, and monthly payers for the first quarter they stop falling. The scorecard below shows where our ratings put Roblox and the four larger networks at today's prices.
138M daily users, 64% age-checked (Q3 2026); not covered by Australia's under-16 rule
Facebook, Instagram and Threads covered by Australia's under-16 rule
Snapchat covered by Australia's under-16 rule
YouTube covered by Australia's under-16 rule

Reddit Stock After Q3 2026 Earnings: The Users Google Was Lending
Reddit fell about 25% after warning that lost Google search traffic could cut its daily users by a low-double-digit percentage in Q4, but the users leaving are logged-out visitors, and I think the logged-in core that carries most of the ad money is the moat.

HoldingIf Roblox reports Q2 2027 daily active users below Q2 2026's 123 million (due around late July 2027), or its Q2 2027 letter still doesn't say on-platform communication is back above pre-age-check levels, the age check did lasting damage to the network and I'm wrong.

Meta Connect 2026: The Future of Meta Is the Agent on the Face, Not the Headset
Connect's headline was a 100-gram VR headset that ships next spring, but the device that decides Meta's next decade is the cheap pair of glasses already selling, because Muse is moving onto it and the frame revenue is not Meta's to keep.

The market heard Muse and priced a ChatGPT rival. What shipped is a personal agent on iOS, Android, and muse.ai that also runs in WhatsApp, with glasses later, plus a separate Meta One bundle at 15 million subscriptions and trials. Agents sort on habit plus checkout. Alexa is this category without the habit.
