## Moat

Number two in enterprise campus networking after adding Juniper to Aruba, a scale server and storage vendor, and the builder of the largest US supercomputers through Cray. Scale and enterprise relationships, like Dell, with more of the mix in networking software.

### The Networking-Weighted Enterprise Vendor

HPE's edge is **enterprise distribution plus a networking franchise that now carries a fifth of revenue at double the company margin**, not a software platform:

- **Networking After Juniper:** Networking was $2.9B in Q3 FY26 (+75% with Juniper) at a 22.0% operating margin: campus and branch $1.4B, routing $788M, data-center networking $382M (+112%) and security $281M. Aruba Central and Juniper's Mist AI manage the campus estates, and Junos runs the routers. Cisco is the incumbent and Arista leads in data-center switching, so this is a strong number two, not a lock.
- **Servers, Storage and Cray:** Server revenue was $6.8B (+35%) and the Cloud & AI segment margin rose to 17.0% from 7.0%. HPE Cray built Frontier, Aurora and El Capitan, the three US exascale systems, which is the engineering credential behind sovereign and research AI wins. In enterprise AI servers HPE competes rack for rack with Dell, Supermicro and Lenovo on the same NVIDIA reference designs.
- **GreenLake and Enterprise Contracts:** GreenLake consumption contracts, financial services and multi-year support tie customers to HPE's roadmap, and FedRAMP and government accreditations matter for regulated buyers. Dell holds the same accreditations and channel depth, so these pillars rate at Dell's levels.

**Moat verdict:** HPE's moat is an enterprise infrastructure franchise rated like Dell's, with the bundle at intact for lack of an attach figure and the Juniper networking software adding customer-authored switching cost. The AI-vulnerable side is limited: network operations tools like Mist AI are where AI substitutes for operator work, and HPE owns that tool rather than competing with it.

## Growth

Q3 FY2026 (ended July 31, reported September 2) printed record revenue of $12.21B (+34% YoY) and non-GAAP EPS of $1.11 against $0.88–0.93 guided, the first quarter above $1. Server was $6.8B (+35%), Networking $2.9B (+75%, with Juniper in the year-ago base only from July 2025), Storage $1.3B (+10%) and Financial Services $0.9B (flat). Non-GAAP operating margin was 16.2% (+770bp) and free cash flow $958M. Q4 is guided to $13.9–14.8B and $1.20–1.30 of EPS; FY2026 to +34–37% revenue, $3.75–3.85 of EPS and at least $3.75B of FCF. The FY2027 framework was raised to +13–17% revenue, +16–20% EPS and at least $5.0B of FCF. Inventory rose to $11.8B from $6.4B at the start of the year to feed the AI backlog, which the CFO called a record. The stock fell about 20% between October 9 and 15 on AI-financing and server revenue-quality concerns.

- **Revenue CAGR estimate:** 8–12%
- **Primary type:** both
- **Margin trend:** expanding
- **Key risk (high):** Server growth is being financed by working capital: inventory nearly doubled to $11.8B in nine months. If AI-system orders slip or customers' financing tightens (the concern behind the October selloff), HPE carries the inventory at thin AI-server margins while Juniper's integration is still under way. Falsifiable: FY2027 revenue growth below 10% or non-GAAP operating margin below 13%, against the 13–17% and 14–15% framework.
- **Drivers:**
  - Servers (incl. AI systems) — Q3 FY26 $6.8B, +35.3% YoY; record backlog; inventory $11.8B (accelerating)
  - Networking (Aruba + Juniper) — Q3 FY26 $2.9B, +74.9% with Juniper added (closed July 2025); organic growth not disclosed, so the reported rate is not read as acceleration (stable)
  - Storage — Q3 FY26 $1.3B, +10.2% YoY (stable)
- **Score derivation:** Base 72.9 (8–12% CAGR, midpoint 10%) + 1.3 trajectory (servers accelerating; networking held stable because the +75% is mostly Juniper entering the base; storage stable) + 4 margin (non-GAAP operating margin 8.5% to 16.2% year over year; FY27 framework 14–15%) − 10 high risk (the AI-server step Dell and Supermicro carry under rule G4: servers are $6.8B of $12.2B revenue and inventory nearly doubled to $11.8B, so networking's share does not earn a step below Dell) = 68

## Valuation

At $56.69 (October 23 close, ~$75B) HPE is ~23% below its $73.56 52-week high after the October selloff. That is ~15× FY2026 non-GAAP EPS guided at $3.75–3.85 and ~13× a FY2027 near $4.45 (FY2026 midpoint plus the 16–20% framework). The base is ~15× FY2027, below Dell's ~20× FY2027 base: HPE carries ~$14B of net debt from the Juniper deal, a lower margin structure and slower growth, which is the gap. The bear is ~10× a FY2027 that misses the framework, and the bull ~17× a FY2028 near $5.30. Spot is ~64% of the way from the $40 bear to the $66 base, for a valuation score of 74. The base is ~1.01× the $65.44 Street mean.

| Multiple | Value | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Forward P/E (FY26 guide) | ~15× | Non-GAAP EPS guided $3.75–3.85; GAAP $2.93–3.03 |
| Forward P/E (FY27 sketch) | ~13× | FY26 midpoint $3.80 grown at the 16–20% FY27 EPS framework ≈ $4.45 |
| Price / FCF (FY27) | ~15× | FY27 FCF framework at least $5.0B |
| Dividend | $0.1425 / qtr | ~1.0% yield |

HPE trades at a discount to Dell on every earnings measure, and most of the gap is earned: more debt after Juniper, lower margins and a slower framework. The base does not close that gap; it prices the FY2027 framework at a market-like multiple. Q4 FY26 (early December) against $13.9–14.8B and $1.20–1.30 is the next input. _(as of October 23, 2026 (price $56.69))_

## Price scenarios

### Bear — $40

AI-system orders slip, inventory has to be worked down at low margin, FY2027 misses the framework, and the stock trades at ~10× a ~$4.00 EPS.

- Q4 FY26 lands below $13.9B as AI-system deliveries move out
- Inventory stays above $10B and free cash flow misses the $3.75B FY26 floor
- Juniper integration costs or customer attrition hold networking growth below the framework

### Base — $66

FY2026 lands at $3.75–3.85, FY2027 delivers the 13–17% revenue and 16–20% EPS framework, and the market pays ~15× a FY2027 near $4.45.

- Q4 FY26 delivers $13.9–14.8B and $1.20–1.30 EPS
- Networking holds a ~22% operating margin as Juniper synergies land
- FY27 free cash flow reaches at least $5.0B and net debt falls

### Bull — $90

AI systems and data-center networking keep compounding, FY2028 EPS reaches ~$5.30, and HPE re-rates toward ~17× as networking becomes a larger share of profit.

- Data-center networking sustains triple-digit growth from Juniper and AI fabrics
- Cloud & AI segment margin holds the 17% Q3 level
- Deleveraging and buybacks lift per-share earnings above the framework
