# Who Will Win the Frontier AI Race? Meta's Muse Wonder and the Shareholders Paid Either Way — InvestMoat Research

_The frontier AI race is usually scored lab by lab. For shareholders it is scored by seats: Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Nvidia are paid whichever lab leads, SpaceX rents its cluster to a rival, Apple rents a model, and Meta, with Muse Wonder, funds its frontier bet alone._

## Summary

Meta released Muse Wonder on October 12, 2026, and coverage scored it the way the frontier race is usually scored: against Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra, benchmark by benchmark. Across seven covered names the race is structured differently. Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Nvidia each hold equity in at least one outside frontier lab and sell it compute, so they are paid whichever model leads; SpaceX builds Grok and still rents its Colossus cluster to Anthropic; Apple rents Gemini for Siri. Meta builds the model, owns the surface, holds no outside lab stake and has deferred renting its compute, so its AI return runs only through its own apps. The counter-case is real: the lab leading the paid use case has compounded faster than any landlord, and an owner that wins keeps all of it.

## What would prove this wrong

If, by October 13, 2027, Meta discloses Muse-attributed revenue (subscriptions, the Meta Model API or transaction fees) running at an annualised $10B or more, the unhedged structure will have paid on its own and the exposure this note describes will have been the better side of the trade. On the seats: if, by the same date, Amazon, Alphabet or Microsoft discloses a reduction in remaining performance obligations or backlog attributed to a frontier lab, or a named lab compute commitment to one of them is cut, the landlord seat will have proved skippable. If neither happens and Meta discloses nothing, the Meta half stays untested rather than proven.

On October 12, 2026 Meta released Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, its first models pitched as frontier-class. Launch coverage scored them the way the frontier race is always scored: against Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra, one benchmark at a time. On Meta's own model card Wonder Full leads on Meta's chosen coding benchmarks and trails Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra on Terminal-Bench, with test setups that were not identical across vendors. Wonder is sold through the Meta Model API; Wonder Full is held back for paying Muse Code subscribers. Meta's shares rose on the day.

Ask who will win the frontier race and the answer is usually a lab and a leaderboard. That is the right question for a lab's investors and the wrong one for a public shareholder in the megacaps, because the megacaps are not paid the same way when a lab wins. **Seven covered names sit at the frontier table, and four of them have arranged to be paid whichever lab leads.** It is a familiar idea for the landlords. What is less familiar is how far it separates Meta from the names it trades with as one AI basket.

## Four seats, seven companies

There are four ways a public company gets paid by frontier AI. It can build a frontier model and sell access. It can own equity in a lab that does. It can rent a lab the compute it trains and serves on. And it can own the surface where people use the result. The table records which seat each name holds as of October 2026, from the companies' own announcements where they exist and from reporting, marked as such, where they do not.

**Seats at the frontier table: who builds, who owns a stake, who rents the compute, who owns the surface**

Read the columns rather than the rows. Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Nvidia each hold equity in at least one outside frontier lab, and Amazon, Microsoft and Nvidia hold equity in both of the labs the market treats as the leaders. The same four are paid again as landlord or arms dealer, because the labs train and serve on their silicon and in their data centres; Anthropic's own posts say it runs on Trainium, TPUs and Nvidia GPUs at once. A lab that changes which model is best does not change who it pays rent to. Meta is the only name in the table with a model and a surface and neither of the middle two seats.

**The four pillars a frontier AI position would claim, grouped by seat. Statuses are read live from each stock's analysis, so this matrix updates whenever a name is reviewed.**

Only one column sorts on seats, and it is the first. **Meta is the one name in the cohort whose scale-economics pillar is rated intact rather than strong.** The framework's own reason is that Google and Amazon spend at similar scale, so Meta's budget buys no unit-cost lead. The table suggests why that matters more for Meta than for the others: their fleets earn from outside tenants, frontier labs among them, while Meta's serves one customer. The other columns do not sort on seats. Learned interfaces are strong at Alphabet, Nvidia and Apple, and in each case the habit is Search, CUDA or iOS, not a model; Meta's is intact, because a model API is the easiest dependency in software to swap. Meta's strong pillars are the graph, the data and the checkout, which it held before Muse and keeps whichever lab wins.

The scorecard does not sort on seats either, and it is not meant to. Apple holds the cheapest seat and the framework rates its moat above Alphabet's; valuation, growth and the ad cycle move these names more than any model launch. The claim here is narrower: seats decide how each company is paid by frontier AI, not where it ranks overall.

## SpaceX built a lab and still took the rent

SpaceX is the cohort's useful exception, because it is the closest structural match to Meta. Through the xAI combination it builds a frontier model, Grok, and owns a consumer surface, X. On Meta's logic it would keep every GPU for itself. Instead Anthropic listed GPU capacity in SpaceX's Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 among the compute agreements in its May 2026 Series H post, alongside Amazon and Google. A lab-builder sold capacity to a rival lab. That makes Meta's position a choice rather than a law of the industry: a company can build a frontier model and still hold the landlord seat. Meta announced Meta Compute in July and then, on the Q2 2026 call, said it was getting offers for compute at a significant premium to what it paid, that it would prioritise its own models, and that it still expects to grow a large business serving large customers. It has not yet reported any revenue from it.

> **The seat test** — Ask of any AI announcement: if the company's own model came second next quarter, which of its revenue lines would still grow? For Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Nvidia the answer includes cloud or chip revenue from the lab that beat them, and for SpaceX the rent on Colossus. For Meta today the answer is advertising and, in time, the transactions Muse closes on Meta's own surfaces: both real, and both routed through Meta's apps rather than through anyone else's success.

## Why the landlord is paid first

Frontier labs need years of compute committed before the revenue to pay for it exists. That makes the compute contract the first claim on a lab's success, and the equity stakes are how the landlords made sure of it.

- **The commitment comes before the model.** Anthropic committed more than $100B to AWS over ten years on April 20, 2026, securing up to 5GW of new capacity, and its May Series H post put the Google and Broadcom TPU agreement at five gigawatts from 2027. Those commitments are set whether or not its next model leads.
- **The stake comes with the contract.** Amazon's April investment and Google's reported up-to-$40B commitment arrived alongside the compute deals, not separately. Microsoft's OpenAI stake sits next to an Azure book in which OpenAI was about 45% of commercial remaining performance obligations at Q2 FY26.
- **Multi-sourcing helps the landlords as a group.** A lab that trains on three chip families and sells through three clouds is hard for any single landlord to lose entirely, and impossible for all of them to lose at once.
- **The surface can be rented too.** Apple chose Gemini for Siri and runs it inside Private Cloud Compute. The company with the most valuable device surface concluded that owning the frontier model was not necessary to own the customer.

## The leader keeps the margin, and only an owner keeps all of it

The strongest objection is that the seat-holders are collecting the cheap part of the race. Anthropic's own posts put its run-rate revenue at about $9B at the end of 2025, above $30B by early April 2026 and above $47B in May, and CNBC reported $65B for July from an investor update. That growth came from leading the use case customers pay for, coding and agents, not from distribution. If leadership in the paid use case proves durable, the lab keeps the margin on it, and a minority stake plus rent is a slice of it. A landlord's margin is a landlord's margin.

**Anthropic run-rate revenue, $B. The first three points are Anthropic's own lower bounds (about, surpassed, crossed); July is an investor update reported by CNBC. Periods are unevenly spaced: four months, then one, then two.**

| Period | Run-rate revenue ($B) |
| --- | --- |
| Dec 2025 | $9 |
| Apr 2026 | $30 |
| May 2026 | $47 |
| Jul 2026 | $65 |

On that reading Meta is not the exposed name; it is the only megacap positioned to keep a whole prize. Muse Wonder arrived six months after Muse Spark and lands at or near the frontier on Meta's own card. Meta's surface reaches 3.6 billion people a day, and a model at parity in front of that audience can out-earn a slightly better model in front of a smaller one without splitting the result with a landlord or a partner. Meta has also said where it expects the money to come from, and it is not mainly subscriptions: at Connect in September Zuckerberg said Muse would earn a small fee on the transactions it completes, and Family of Apps Other revenue, the line that would carry it, grew 73% in Q2 2026.

A Meta holder would add that the outright bet is not all-or-nothing. If Muse falls behind, Meta can rent a model the way Apple does and still own the customer, so the downside is stranded capital spending rather than no AI return at all. And the seats carry a risk the outright bet does not. A stake in a lab is a claim on that lab's valuation, and a large compute contract with a lab is credit exposure to it; when reporting in October suggested OpenAI's revenue was lighter than believed, the names holding its contracts moved first, as this site's [note on OpenAI's revenue report](/research/openai-and-the-moat-behind-the-contract) sets out. Being paid whichever lab leads assumes the leading labs keep raising money.

Each of those points is right, and none of them changes the shape of the exposure. Transaction fees, ad lift and a rented fallback model all route through Meta's own apps; none of them pays Meta when someone else's model pulls ahead. Stranded capital spending is exactly the downside a seat-holder does not carry alone, because its fleet has outside tenants. The counter-case is a case for Meta's upside, not against its concentration.

## Who wins the race: the name with the most seats

If the question is which lab will have the best model in a year, nobody knows, and the 2026 leaderboards have changed hands often enough to say so. If the question is which covered company is most likely to be paid by frontier AI regardless, the table answers it. **Alphabet is the only covered name holding all four seats**: its own frontier model, a stake in Anthropic, the TPU fleet Anthropic is signing up for, and a consumer surface in Search, Android and the Gemini app. Amazon holds three, with two lab stakes and the primary landlord role. Microsoft and Nvidia hold stakes in both leading labs and are paid on volume either way. SpaceX shows a lab-builder can keep a landlord seat. Apple holds the cheapest seat at the table.

For Meta, Muse Wonder does not change the moat case. The framework already credits the graph, the data and the checkout, and rates the model-shaped pillars below strong; whether META clears the IM25 floors is a composite question, and [the portfolio page](/portfolio) carries the live answer. What Muse Wonder adds is a clearer test. Meta now has a frontier-class model, an API price, paid tiers and a stated transaction-fee model, so the next prints can show whether any of them earns; [the WhatsApp-test note](/research/meta-muse-and-the-whatsapp-test) sets out what that receipt would look like. Until one does, Meta is the purest frontier bet among the megacaps, and the purest is also the least hedged.

> **What would break this** — **One:** Meta disclosing Muse-attributed revenue, from subscriptions, the API or transaction fees, running at an annualised $10B or more by October 2027, which would mean the unhedged bet paid on its own. **Two:** Amazon, Alphabet or Microsoft disclosing a backlog reduction attributed to a frontier lab, or a named lab compute commitment being cut, which would show the landlord seat can be skipped. **Three:** Meta reporting Meta Compute revenue at scale, which would give it the seat this note says it lacks and should move the scale pillar.

The lesson generalises past this cohort. A model launch is news about one lab; who gets paid is a fact about contracts. **In a race where the lead changes every few months, the shareholder's question is not who is ahead but how many ways a company is paid when it is not.**
